Life and Business Leadership Insight
- November 03

In this issue:

"The Power of Personal Accountability in Life and Business"

"It really isn't my fault because....." is one of the most telling signs of someone who needs to work on their personal accountability.

The premise that you are unable to deliver your project or outcome due to "extraneous" circumstances is, in my opinion, very weak yet the number of times that I hear this sort of "buck passing" is unfortunately, very high.

So how do you consistently identify this "trait" in someone and, most importantly perhaps how can you assist to eliminate this behaviour in your business.

Let me deal with the identification of the behaviour first…

Here are some of the "tell tale" signs:

  1. Consistently making excuses for not delivering on outcomes especially when they have been assigned to the person.

  2. Failure to respect other members of a team by consistently failing to fulfil their obligations to the team and as a result eroding the "value" system of the business.

  3. Prefers work environments where action plans and time frames are not specified so the inability to deliver can be easily disguised and often overlooked.

  4. Often has a very relaxed approach to important individual or team deadlines.

  5. Finds it difficult to apologise for personal errors of judgement that effect the business.

  6. Often has a very untidy work environment that affects the efficiency and productivity of the rest of the team both directly and indirectly.

  7. Often operates under the misunderstanding that they are "owed" support and a living from their employer.

It is important to realise that if one of these behaviours is prevalent then it is imperative to take action to rectify it immediately. If there are more than one of these traits prevalent then time and action is of the essence.

I have listed below some of the actions that are necessary. (Fortunately, the course of action is simple).

Firstly, respectfully alert the person to the behaviour that needs to be addressed and why.

Secondly, outline the consequences to the person of failing to comply with the request.

Thirdly, follow through to ensure that the new behaviour is adopted.

The really important thing to realise here is that as a leader you are responsible for the harmony, efficiency and profitability of the operation.

Would the real leader please stand up?

(NB: These issues and guidelines are also applicable to the family unit.)

Richard.
