Life and Business Leadership Insight
- May / June 04

In this issue:

I get to interact with many different types of people and businesses in my work. A consistently reoccurring theme in my discussions is how the workplace could be made to be more dynamic, innovative and fun. A place that you would actually want to visit rather than need to…if you get the picture.

There is no doubt in my mind that one of the secrets to improved people, performance, production and profits is to create more fun and "state change"opportunities and activities in the workplace.

The concept that a person can be totally productive for a full eight hour shift is laughable especially when you consider that most people have functional attention span of approx 45-60 minutes and then require a change of activity to prevent boredom setting in.

Sports conditioning specialists have understood this concept for decades because the same training stimulus constantly repeated negatively impacts on performance and also increases the risk of physical injury.

The same work stimulus over and over again produces the same issues with workers except "injuries" are also measured both physically and emotionally.

The solution is simple and the more progressive organisations are beginning to realise the benefits in all aspects of the business. You maybe wondering what constitutes a "state change" and the answer is almost anything providing it has no deleterious effects on your health and also builds the capacity for improved performance in the workplace.

Here are some ideas that you can apply immediately:

  • Do five minutes of gentle stretches every hour at your work station.
  • Purchase a "Fitball" to sit on instead of a standard chair.
  • Have a series of small food snacks over the day to ensure that you remain alert and productive.
  • Play relaxing music ("alpha" based music-Mozart) whilst doing menial tasks.
  • Break your forty five minute lunch break into two twenty minute breaks about an hour and half apart.
  • Learn how to do five minute "power" naps to ensure that you stay alert.

At the end of the day you have to take responsibility for your own state and so if it is necessary to change it for the better then the buck stops with you. More and more people are refusing to take responsibility for their lives and most importantly their "state" claiming that they are victims of circumstances. One of the best state changes you can achieve is to decide not to be a victim but a willing participant in the wonderful experience that is life.

How to Get What You Want
Getting what you want from life is everyone’s desire and basic right. Why is it then that so many people do not have what they want and seem powerless and uninterested in changing? The answer is that many do not know how to change or where to begin.
