Insight – May 2005

In this issue:

"How to Create a Window of Opportunity for Buisness and Personal Development".

Recently, I sat down and confronted the fact that I was working too much in my business and not enough on my business.

The literal translation of this means that I was devoting almost all of my time to what my clients and customers demands were and losing sight of the fact that to totally enjoy your work and business pursuits you must devote time to the process of reviewing how you do what you do so that you can stay fresh and invigorated.

The simple solution is to establish some regular weekly time specifically devoted to improving your business focus, processes and systems.

Irrespective of whether you work for yourself or for someone else this self management strategy pays big dividends when it comes to staying abreast of both your competition and professional development.

I believe that to embrace this concept effectively the following steps are crucial:

  • Set aside a specific time each week that you block out to allow yourself time to work on your business.
  • Keep a list of ideas and to do items that relate to how you could improve both you and your business bottom line.
  • Set yourself a timeline and priority list so that you can identify the most important tasks and opportunities.
  • Ensure that you keep to your plan and avoid placing any appointments in the section designated as businees and personal development.

In the interest of work/life balance the time designated for working on your business should be during the working week and not weekends. My personal preference is either Monday, Wednesday or Friday or part thereof.

I do recognise that each industry has it's own busy, busier and busiest days so that could affect your decision also.

In the Crocodiles not Waterlilies Self-Leadership program there is a universal principle (W3HOO) that poses four simple but very crucial questions relating to your personal success journey and the logic of spending time working both on your business and on yourself.

The four questions are:

  • Who am I?
  • What am I capable of?
  • Where am I going?
  • How am I going to get there?

The difference between those people who can answer these questions and those that struggle might just be the amount of time spent on rather than in the day to day of making a living.

Monthly Self-leadership Challenge…

This is a section dedicated to challenging you to become a more complete self-leader and professional that exudes passion and performance.

This Month's Challenge:

Learning how to give constructive feedback effectively:

First, start the communication with a positive positioning statement such as: "I have enjoyed working with you and enjoy your contribution to the team". Only state something that you truly believe to be the case.

Second, then point out your constructive feedback option. For example; "Lately I have noticed that you have been coming to work later than the rest of the team and that disappoints me".

Third, outline how you want the situation to improve such as: "I would appreciate it if you could address this situation and be on time for work like the rest of the team".

Finally, the real skill with this is to ensure that you do not join any of the sections with the words "but" or "however" as this immediately discounts the integrity of the first statement. Practice this approach so that you can become well practiced in the art of giving constructive feedback without turning the receiver against you.

Recent Testimonials...

Dear Richard,

It really works!

Thankyou for your course on Stress Management, which I attended in early March.  I was the one with the phobia of snakes!  You told us we had to apply your skills religiously for one month and our lives would be changed.

At first I found it hard and inwardly rejected a changed approach.  But after a couple of the usual crises that are regular in my work environment, I became determined to give it a go.

And I would say my life has definitely changed!

The people I work with have noticed my more relaxed attitude and respond by also taking a more calm approach when they see how I am dealing with situations.

Explaining the rationale of a stress free approach to others reinforces your own outlook also.  Likewise in my home life, my whole family has noticed my new approach and similarly flowed on to a new carefree, happy and fullfilling life.

Thankyou.

Most of what you said in the course I have read in self help books, but it was coming to your seminar that has made the difference!  Keep up the good work.
