"The Adult Dream…. to Sleep like a Baby"

It is a crucial proviso of "peak performance" to be able to alternate between cycles of activity and rest throughout the day.
Yet, the most important "recovery" period is how soundly you sleep every night and how completely both your body and brain recharge.
Almost everybody knows how wonderful they feel after a good night's sleep so the evidence is clear and it is also important to realise that everyone has different sleep requirements.
Anything from ten hours, all the way through to six or even less!

So in the interest of sweeter dreams I thought it was about time that I list down some of the basic steps that are involved in getting a great nights sleep every night!
So here they are....simple, straight forward and definitely sleep enhancing.

  • Spend 10 - 15 minutes before retiring to the bedroom filling your diary to ensure that you have uncluttered your mind and have a comprehensive to do list for the next day.
  • Adopt your most comfortable sleeping position and close your eyes and begin to breathe slowly through your nose filling your lungs to ¾ capacity.
  • During this phase focus gently on your "slow" breathing cycle and nothing else. If other thoughts come into your head, gently usher them out and refocus on your breathing.
  • Complete this mind focus exercise on the "slow" exhalation phase as well and focus on thinking about how slow you nose breathe both out and in.
  • Be prepared to be patient and usher out unwanted thoughts and allow yourself time to practice the art of having a peaceful, relaxed mind.
  • This brain training exercise is very effective and will allow you to teach your mind to link the act of sleeping with creating a calm, clear and relaxed mindset.

The evidence is overwhelming that the secret to sleeping like a baby is to be able to think of nothing and practice this. Focussing on your nose breathing cycles is the closest thing to thinking about nothing as the prelude to going to sleep.

Oh…by the way ask any body who sleeps like a baby what they think of…… they'll tell you nothing.
Take their advice and learn to think of nothing at bedtime.

Monthly Self-leadership Challenge…

This is a new section dedicated to challenging you to become a more complete professional.

This month's challenge: To complete some form of activity each day and begin to reverse the alarming trend of adolescent and adult obesity which is creating a monumental task to arrest.
Here are some pointers:

  • Be able to achieve 4kms x 30mins x 4 times a week.
  • Build some activity into your day everyday.
  • 6 x 5min "Aerobic" sessions throughout the day.

First, write the goal down and ensure that you put it somewhere obvious.
Second, establish some sacred "activity" time each day for thirty minutes.
Third, select an exercise activity that you will find stimulating and you finish it off

Enjoy building your knowledge (another part of Maslow's hierarchy of human needs...)
