"The Power of Forgiveness and Leadership"

Believe it or not the skill of forgiveness is a pivotal leadership skill that ensures that you and your team stay true to your purpose and vision.

To forgive, though, in business sometimes seems at odds with the psyche and culture of current day business ethics.

Obviously, some issues in business require astute judgment by being able to apply the principle of forgiveness when appropriate. This is, of course, one of the emotional intelligence skills of great leaders and common in strong cohesive teams.

Back to the concept of forgiveness though...

Interestingly there are some simple steps that can be used on a daily basis to establish the principle of forgiveness so that it plays a more prominent role in your decision making, management of self and the leadership of others.

Firstly, the reason why forgiveness is such an important skill relates to the fact that as mentioned before it allows individuals to stay true to their purpose.

When an unfortunate or regrettable incident occurs the following positive mindset can be maintained by understanding these simple steps:

  • An event occurs.
  • Anger begins to establish itself which is an uncomfortable emotional feeling.
  • Forgiveness is practiced which results in a return to a more calm emotional state. This is combined with a personal insight or discussion with the person about the situation.
  • Return to mission becomes possible.
  • Completion of purpose due to ability to refocus on skills and important issues.

 Compare this with:

  • An event occurs.
  • Anger begins to establish itself and is exaccerbated by a negative train of thought.
  • Hurt becomes the focus.
  • Revenge or retribution is planned.
  • Misery develops as a by product of the process.
  • Apathy then becomes the norm as life purpose becomes distorted.

When comparing the final outcomes from both processes only the first option results in positive personal and team growth.

There is no doubt that your emotional and physical health benefit enormously from your ability to maintain a state of relaxed optimism.

When considering whether or not to master the art of forgiveness the following principles and questions may prove to be helpful:

  • Does forgiveness allow me to enjoy greater levels of inner peace?
  • Do we as a society actively encourage forgiveness?
  • How effectively have I mastered the art of forgiveness?
  • The concept of karma...what goes around comes around.
  • Does the person involved actually understand the impact of their actions and where did they learn that behaviour from?
  • What benefit is served from the act of revenge or retribution?

It is important to realise that making people accountable for their behaviours is a fundamental premise underlying most of the work that I do.

Accountability and forgiveness can and should

exist together, the crucial question to ask is when and how do you as a leader of self and others make the call?

Your ability to get this right will undoubtedly ensure that you maintain the delicate balance between respect and compassion.

The outcome is worth the struggle.

  • Monthly Self-leadership Challenge…

This is a new section dedicated to challenging you to become a more complete self-leader and professional.

    This month’s challenge:

Creating a still mind using single point meditation and the practice steps involved:

First, sit comfortably and focus your eyes on any random object of your choice.

Second, think only of the object that you have focussed on.

Third, if you recognise that your thoughts have wondered away from the object slowly bring your mind back to its original focus.

Finally, practice and celebrate small improvements as this process is opposite to what happens to our thinking process on a daily basis.

"The Power of One and Building a Great Team"
    (Team Building):

    Overview:

Building a great team relies on the effective self-leadership skills of the team leader to be able to mould the team into a cohesive unit. One of the most important factors in building a great team is to recognise the extraordinary potential power and contribution of each individual in the group and to develop an environment where those skills can flourish.

Strong teams also depend on great "systems" to be able to consistently reproduce great results as well as a strong commitment to "personal success rituals" to ensure that each individual is capable of performing at their peak on a daily basis.

    Designed for:

Those directly responsible for the effective functioning of any team business or otherwise.

    Content:

The session will deal with the important "team building" issues of accountability, personal performance issues, self-leadership skills and team dynamics. It will stimulate and challenge some of the long held beliefs regarding the correct management of teams as well as exposing some myths of team leadership. A great session for anyone involved in the truly successful management of their team.

    Learning Outcomes:

The seminar will clearly explain the following:

    • The power of "systems" within a team.
    • The responsibility each leader has for themselves and the others in the team.
    • The individual "rituals" that must be addressed before "inspiring leadership" can be counted on.
    • How to maintain the culture of the team and stimulate a productive work ethic.
    • How to develop self-leadership skills.

    Duration:

    Half day.

    Dates & Times:

    August 11, 2005. 9.00am - 1.00pm.
