January Insight

In this issue:

Welcome to the New Year and my best wishes for a successful 2006 to everyone....

My Time is My Life and My Life is My Time!

Most people say how quickly time flies and I am convinced that the busier you are the truer the statement is.

The fascinating thing about the passing of time is that it is both subjective and objective. Subjective from the perception of how quickly time passes and objective due to the measurement units of time...secs, mins and hours. Today we cram so much into those units of time that everything seems so rushed and so it becomes even more imperative to use time effectively.

In this insight I want to provide some simple tips on how to manage your time effectively using both behaviour change and technological advances.

Let’s first deal with some simple behaviour change that will put more time in your life:

  • Always program yourself to do the hardest tasks first in the earliest part of the day.
  • Break your tasks up into one hour blocks of intense effort and then do something different for at least 30 minutes. Stay mentally alert.
  • Create a "to do" task list for every day and prioritise the list from urgent/hardest to other less urgent and demanding tasks.
  • Use a diary of some description to track your appointments and commitments.

Three powerful specific behaviours that will make time work for you.

Let's now focus on the technological revolution that is allowing people to use time more flexibly than ever before. I should acknowledge before going any further that I am an avid user of gadgets and devices and love technology in all its guises.

That said technology can allow you to do and achieve so much more that its only real limitation is how you choose to interface with it. Do you control it or does it control you?

Case in point, there was a recent article in the paper that indicated that a whopping 6.3 million Blackberry users state that their mobile device is absolutely indispensable to their business and some are claimed to be addicted to the device sending and receiving emails at all times of the day and night coining the phrase "Crackberry" addict!

So what are some of the advantages of technology (specifically PDA'S) in managing your time?

Whilst this list is by no means exhaustive I think most business professionals would appreciate the flexibility of the following:

  • Send and receive emails on the move.
  • Search and retrieve information from the web from remote locations.
  • Have multiple “timed” to do lists that can be constantly monitored and updated and are at your fingertips.
  • A device that holds all of your important personal and business details.
  • The ability to design and draft word documents and PowerPoint presentations anywhere, anytime. In fact this article has been written on my handheld PDA in between basketball games, sitting in the garden and at the kitchen table.
  • The ability to synchronise my data daily with my desktop is also a wonderful advantage and saves enormous amounts of time whilst also letting my business partner know what I am doing.

These are just some of what I perceive to be outstanding tools for maximising your productivity and whilst some of you may think that this is passé and quite logical you would be amazed at how many people I speak to and coach who do not employ any of these proven techniques or are just that little too intimidated by the speed and pace of technology.

As someone once said to me…. “Time is Life and Life is Time”...so make the most of what you have everyday. You can never get it back.

      Courage...The Joy of Living Dangerously

Author: OSHO
Publisher: St Martins Griffin. New York
ISBN No: 0-312-20517-1

This book is a fascinating insight into the concept of real courage and where it comes from. Osho encourages everyone to get in touch with whatever fear demoralises you and work out why that is the case.

He promotes thinking as an individual instead of following belief patterns & trends set by society and some of it's controlling agents such as religion etc. Very thought provoking.

Recent Testimonials...

Hi Richard,

Just would like to say how much your seminar and yourself (of course) inspired me. I have been to many motivational seminars but the way you teach it is more fun and you tend to absorb it a lot quicker. I have always had the tools but tend not to have the time to use them. Now what keeps popping into my head is the characters, so it reminds me of what l have to do.

You have great passion for what you do and you shared it with all of us over and over. Thank you and l hope very much to cross your path again in the future.

P.s  The coffee was very enjoyable and I did appreciate it.

Keep smiling!

Regards,
