"The Secret Foundation of Performance"

Hi

Some of you who know me well recognise my interest in performance, behaviour and outcomes. I am fascinated by how behaviours begin, direct, influence and achieve outcomes both good and otherwise.

Over the New Year I decided that I would dedicate more of my site to the successful establishment of performance enhancing rituals so that each person has the opportunity to learn more about what they can do to be better self-leaders.

I have always believed that our day to day performance is linked to specific variables that we can control if we have the desire and motivation to manipulate them.

I often hear from people that they lack the motivation to achieve the change they desire and you know what I never believe them…

I do not believe for one second that some people are born with motivation and others miss out. I am from the school that believes that motivation has more to do with the value you place on an objective and whether you have the self-leadership rituals bedded down in your life that actually enable you to apply yourself to whatever goal you desire both physically, emotionally and mentally.

Abraham Maslow was also someone of a similar belief.
His landmark work on the basis of human motivation has been broadly discussed and still holds enormous "clout" when understanding why some people achieve more of their goals than others.

His philosophy was relatively simple; he believed that before a person can focus on higher level goals, basic human needs must first be satisfied. He was of course referring to the physical needs of human beings and whilst he was talking about life sustaining things such as food, water, sleep, rest and activity his hypothesis also holds true for "modern day" combinations of the above.

His logic was simple…if you are starving hungry there is only one thing that you are focussed on, food…nothing else matters. The same can be said of all his other "physical" needs; you lack one badly enough it becomes your absolute focus.

(If you would like to investigate Maslow's hierarchy further go to: www.businessballs.com and search for Maslow)

So all of this makes me believe that the person that says "I'm not motivated" is in reality probably saying that my self-leadership rituals are incomplete (ie: I'm tired, or eating the wrong things, or missing out on regular activity etc, etc) and not well enough structured to provide the base level of physical wellness to stimulate the mental wellness loop resulting in improved self-esteem and down the road a little -motivation.

Many people say mind-body but body-mind has a large roll to play in the successful achievement of your goals.

So next time you are tempted to say that I am not motivated, ask yourself is that really the case or are you just tired, hungry for the right food, dehydrated, lethargic through lack of activity or tense?

How to Get What You Want
Getting what you want from life is everyone’s desire and basic right. Why is it then that so many people do not have what they want and seem powerless and uninterested in changing? The answer is that many do not know how to change or where to begin.

Monthly Self-leadership Challenge…

This is a new section dedicated to challenging you to become a more complete professional.

This month's challenge: To read a book for each month of the year over 2004.

First, write the goal down and ensure that you put it somewhere obvious.
Second, establish some sacred reading time each day for thirty minutes.
Third, select a book that you will find stimulating.

Enjoy building your knowledge (another part of Maslow's hierarchy of human needs...)

Dear Richard,

I would like to give you a big "Thank you".

18 months ago I attended the Barry Plant Doherty conference in Fiji and heard you speak. Your presentation was very inspiring and your positive attitude very contagious.
